BAT Vs ITC boardroom struggle of mid 90s
BAT plc of UK struggle with ITC was projected as an instance of a Multinational trying to wrest control of its Indian subsidiary by increasing its 35% shareholding.
The Solution
DMA decided to shift focus of battle away from the corporate to individuals by painting ITC chief KL Chugh as the problem figure. We increased shareholding and took FIs into confidence to act as pressure group and balancing force. We insisted on changing Chugh as chairman of ITC and ensure boardroom participation.
TATA STEEL
TATA STEEL faced the controversy during early 90s over move to remove
Rusi Modi. Tata Group faced adverse publicity as media was lapping up only long-term supremo Modi's views.
The Solution
DMA ensured balanced reporting with focus on management continuity. We organized a Press party comprising of business, general dailies magazines at Jamshedpur. In this party, Tisco executives, Dept. Heads, employees were interviewed by press.
The Result
True picture emerged and balanced opinion was created.
